Built in 1955 by W.P. "Bill" Atkinson, the Atkinson Heritage Center offers visitors a unique look at the interior of his home exactly as it was when Atkinson and his family lived there. The home offers abundant history even down to the preserved appliances and clothing belonging to the family as well as history collected by Atkinson. Within the confines of the home, there is a special room housing all of the bound volumes of the Oklahoma Journal, which Atkinson published from 1963-1979. Historical records can be traced back to the “Airplane” Room where Tinker Air Force Base leaders and officials would meet, in addition to local, regional, and state political leaders and local education representatives. A Pony Barn, built especially for Atkinson's Shetland ponies, is also part of the mansion grounds and eventually became a museum for local history.
