Tinker Air Force Base Wins Award for Star-Spangled Salute
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) – A popular air and space show at Tinker Air Force Base has received top honors.
The Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award is given to a military base that exhibits traditional community relations as it considers the needs of its civilian neighbors but also sets new standards of excellence by including its community in the planning, execution, and rewards of the air show.
Earlier this month, Tinker Air Force Base was given the award by the International Council of Air Shows in Las Vegas for the Star-Spangled Salute Air and Space Show.
“Tinker’s Air show was a great example of the great partnership displayed with the Oklahoma community,” said Colonel Paul Filcek, 72nd Air Base Wing and installation commander. “This was the largest air show in Tinker’s history, with more than 285,000 spectators. This award represents the dedication, sacrifice, pride and professionalism of so many dedicated people from throughout Oklahoma.”
This year’s event honored the past, present, and future and included an innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program to connect the event to local schools.
“Visitors to the air show have a significant impact to our local economy so the partnership we have is truly a win-win for our community,” said Midwest City Mayor Matthew Dukes. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the tremendous successful air shows at Tinker Air Force Base.”

Arbor Day Foundation Names Midwest City Tree City USA
For Immediate Release: March 7, 2019
MIDWEST CITY - Midwest City was recently named a 2018 Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. It is the 38th year Midwest City has earned this national recognition.
Midwest City met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
"Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education." Trees provide multiple benefits to a community including improving the visual appeal of neighborhoods, increasing property values and reducing home cooling costs. Trees also remove air pollutants and provide a habitat for wildlife.
The Midwest City Tree Board was created in 1980 to advise the City Council on its public tree program. Members of the Tree Board include Sherri Anderson, Lou Atkinson, Margie A. Humdy, Sherry Bearid, Bob Davis, Linda "Suzi" Byrne, Grace Sullivan and Theresa Mortimer.
The Tree Board meets the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October at noon at the Charles J. Johnson Building, Room C at 8726 SE 15th St. The public is welcome to attend.
More information about Tree City USA can be found at arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
About the Arbor Day Foundation: The Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. More information is available at arborday.org.

Midwest City presenting new holiday event, Storyland Christmas
For Immediate Release: Nov. 6, 2015
Christmas is already in the air in Midwest City, as the City prepares to present its new holiday event, Storyland Christmas. The family-friendly event will be held December 3 – 20 in the Charles J Johnson Central Park, located in Town Center Plaza.
The park will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland that will feature thirty-five professionally painted 4” x 8” murals which depict scenes from eight traditional Christmas stories; a 30’ lighted and adorned Christmas Tree; a 20’ x 30’ Euro tent that will provide a warm venue to watch traditional Christmas movies; ‘live’ storybook characters; photos with Santa, thousands of twinkling lights and candy canes lining walkways and much more throughout the 3 week event.
Public relations specialist and event coordinator, Kay Hunt, said the goals of the new event include creating a unique holiday experience that will hopefully become a family tradition with the residents of Midwest City and other visitors as well. “Our event is also intended to take our older visitors back on a nostalgic view of Christmases past, while possibly introducing our younger visitors to many traditional sights and sounds of Christmas they may have not experienced before,” Hunt said. Additionally, Hunt said that events such as Storyland Christmas are a great quality of life experience for residents. “The City is always seeking opportunities for its residents to have within the community that make them proud of the fact that they live and work here. We think Storyland Christmas will be one of those experiences,” Hunt said.
The 35 murals being featured are painted by renowned Oklahoma artist, Dr. Bob E. Palmer, Ed.D, and his selected protégés. Palmer, a retired educator, is best known as the artist who has painted over 1,800 murals across the state, Canada, Mexico and Eastern Europe. He has been recognized as the “Outstanding Oklahoma Higher Education Faculty Member”; “Oklahoma Art Educator of the Year”; selected as the State’s Centennial “Feature Mural Painter” in 2007 and in 2013, was recognized by Governor Mary Fallin with the “Governor’s Art Award in Community Service.”
Hunt said that the city is very honored and excited to have Dr. Palmer paint the murals for this event. “I knew that he was the artist we wanted to ask to paint our murals. I wasn’t sure if he would be interested or not, but, when I called him, he said that he would be very happy to paint them. We are so excited to have him be a part of this event and for Midwest City to be a part of his mural painting legacy,” Hunt said.
Additionally, each grouping of storyland murals will have an audio component. Each story will be professionally recorded or have the song by the same name playing as visitors walk up to the groupings. “We want to create a multi-sensory experience, so adding the audio component to the visual component should make for an enjoyable time,” Hunt said.
On specific days, the event will schedule showings of traditional Christmas movies. All movies will be family-friendly and shown in the large Euro tent. In addition, Santa will be available during the opening event on December 3 and also on Saturday and Sunday afternoons throughout the event to talk with the children and have their family and friends take their photo with the jolly ole’ man. In addition, the 30’ Christmas tree will be the perfect setting for family photos. Hunt encourages visitors to bring their own camera and photographer to capture the memories.
City officials think that Storyland Christmas will be a great compliment to their other traditional holiday event, Holiday Lights Spectacular. City Manager J. Guy Henson said the city has enjoyed the holiday lights drive-through event for nearly twenty years and that Storyland Christmas will be a wonderful addition to the city’s offering of holiday activities. “Midwest City is going to be a very special place this December. We hope that not only our residents will enjoy the events, but, that others from across the area will come to enjoy them as well,” Henson said. The event is being funded in part by the Memorial Hospital Authority Board of Grantors.
